CLAT vs AILET: Which Law Entrance Exam Should You Take?

Planning to study law after Class 12? CLAT and AILET are two of the most important law entrance exams to know about, but they serve different admission goals.

CLAT is the broader route to participating National Law Universities (NLUs), while AILET is specifically the entrance route for the National Law University, Delhi.

So the question isn't really “Which exam is better?”

It's “Which law school are you targeting?”

Here's the difference:

What is CLAT?

CLAT, or Common Law Admission Test, is the entrance examination used for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate law programmes at participating National Law Universities. For a Class 12 student, the relevant route is CLAT UG, which is designed for admission to five-year integrated law programmes. CLAT is particularly useful if you want to keep multiple NLU options open rather than targeting a single institution.

What is AILET?

AILET, or All India Law Entrance Test, is conducted for admission to law programmes at NLU Delhi. It is extremely competitive in nature and is university-specific for admission entrance eligibility.

So now, that makes the decision relatively straightforward.

If you want NLU Delhi, AILET matters.

But if you are considering several NLUs, CLAT becomes essential to your admission strategy.

CLAT vs AILET: Which Exam Is Harder?

There is no useful universal answer to “which is harder.”

The exams can differ in question structure, competition, seat availability and the number of institutions you are competing for.

AILET can feel particularly competitive because you are competing for admission to a single institution with a limited number of seats.

CLAT, meanwhile, gives access to multiple participating NLUs, but the quality of your CLAT rank can significantly affect which institutions and programmes you can realistically target.

So don't choose an exam simply because someone calls it “easier.”

Choose based on your target colleges.

What Does the Exam Test?

Both exams assess skills that matter for law entrance preparation, including areas such as:

  • English language and comprehension

  • Current affairs and general knowledge

  • Logical reasoning

  • Legal reasoning

  • Quantitative techniques

However, the exact pattern, number of questions, marking scheme and syllabus should be checked against the official notification for the year you are applying.

The practical takeaway?

Don't prepare for CLAT and AILET based on an old coaching-centre pattern sheet.

Prepare from the current official exam structure.

Should You Prepare for Both CLAT and AILET?

For many law aspirants, yes.

If you are serious about NLU admissions, preparing for CLAT can build a strong base for law entrance preparation, while AILET preparation keeps NLU Delhi in the picture.

But there is an important distinction:

Don't treat them as two completely separate preparation journeys.

Build your preparation around the shared skill areas first, then adapt your practice to the specific requirements and pattern of each examination.

CLAT or AILET: Which One Should You Take?

Choose CLAT if:

  • You want to apply to multiple participating NLUs.

  • You don't want your law-school options limited to one institution.

  • You want CLAT to form the core of your NLU admission strategy.

Choose AILET if:

  • NLU Delhi is one of your primary targets.

  • You are willing to prepare specifically for its entrance process.

  • You want to compete for admission to NLU Delhi's law programme.

What About Other Law Entrance Exams?

Don't build your entire law-admission plan around CLAT and AILET alone. Depending on the institutions you are considering, also investigate:

  • University-specific law entrance processes

  • State-level law entrance examinations

  • Other recognised admission routes

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is CLAT better than AILET?

Neither is universally “better.” CLAT provides access to multiple participating NLUs, while AILET is primarily for admission to NLU Delhi. Your target colleges should determine which exam matters more to you.

2. Is AILET harder than CLAT?

Difficulty is not something that can be reliably reduced to one ranking. Both are highly competitive, and the level of competition, exam pattern and available seats differ.

3. Which exam should I prepare for after Class 12 for law?

Start with your target law colleges. If you want multiple participating NLUs, prepare for CLAT. If NLU Delhi is a target, include AILET in your plan.

4. Are CLAT and AILET syllabi the same?

They overlap considerably in the skills tested, but their exam structures and requirements can differ. Always prepare using the latest official notification for each examination.

5. Can I study law without taking CLAT or AILET?

Yes. Several law colleges and universities have their own admission processes or accept other recognised entrance routes. Your options depend on the institution and programme you are targeting.
